Melanotan-1 vs Melanotan-2: At a Glance
Both Melanotan-1 and Melanotan-2 are synthetic alpha-MSH analogues studied within the melanocortin system. The key differences are receptor selectivity and regulatory status — the latter being especially important.

How They Differ — Receptor Selectivity
Melanotan-1 is more selective for the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R). Melanotan-2 is a broader agonist acting across several melanocortin receptors (including MC1R, MC3R and MC4R). This breadth of activity is one reason the two are studied and regulated differently.
The Critical Difference — Regulatory Status
The closely related molecule to Melanotan-1, afamelanotide (Scenesse), is an approved medicine in the EU and US for a rare photosensitivity disorder under specialist supervision. Melanotan-2 is not approved by any regulator, and UK and other authorities have warned against unlicensed Melanotan-2 products sold for human use. Research-grade material of either is supplied for laboratory use only and is not for human or cosmetic use.
