The world of research peptides comes with its own vocabulary, and for a newcomer the terminology can be a barrier to making informed decisions. This glossary explains the terms encountered most often — on product pages, Certificates of Analysis and supplier websites — in plain English.
Key Research Peptide Terms
The terms below appear most frequently across peptide research:
Peptide
A short chain of amino acids linked together. Research peptides are synthetic versions made for laboratory study.
Lyophilised
Freeze-dried. Peptides are more stable dry than in solution and are reconstituted before use.
Reconstitution
Dissolving lyophilised powder into a liquid using bacteriostatic water; the water volume sets the final concentration.
Bacteriostatic Water
Sterile water containing benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth. It is the preferred diluent and allows weeks of storage.
HPLC
High-performance liquid chromatography; measures purity by separating a sample's components and quantifying the target peptide.
Mass Spectrometry
Confirms a peptide's identity by measuring its molecular weight against the expected value.
Certificate of Analysis (COA)
An independent-laboratory document recording a peptide's identity, purity and testing methods. A batch-matched COA is specific to your batch.
Purity
The proportion of a sample that is the target peptide, expressed as a percentage by HPLC. High-quality peptides are 99%+.
RUO (Research Use Only)
Indicates a product is solely for laboratory research, not for human or animal consumption. All research peptides are sold on this basis.
Blend
