Why Correct Storage Matters
Research peptides are delicate molecules, and improper storage is one of the most common reasons a high-purity peptide degrades before it is ever used — producing unreliable results in the laboratory. Storing a peptide correctly from the moment it arrives protects both its purity and the validity of any research conducted with it. The correct method depends on one key factor: whether the peptide is still in its original lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder form, or whether it has been reconstituted into a liquid solution.
Storing Lyophilised (Powder) Peptides
While sealed and dry, most lyophilised peptides are remarkably stable and remain usable for 18–24 months or longer. The right temperature depends on how soon you intend to use them:
- Short term: a cool, dark drawer away from heat is sufficient for a few weeks.
- Longer term: refrigerate at 2–8°C.
- Months or more: store in a freezer at -20°C.
Moisture is the primary enemy of freeze-dried powder, so keep the vial sealed until you are ready to reconstitute it.
Storing Reconstituted (Liquid) Peptides
Once a peptide is reconstituted, its shelf life shortens dramatically. A reconstituted solution should be refrigerated at 2–8°C and used within weeks rather than months.
The benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water inhibits bacterial growth and is what makes short-term storage possible; solutions mixed with plain sterile water must be used almost immediately. Keep vials upright and away from light.
Avoiding Freeze-Thaw Cycles
Each freeze-thaw cycle physically stresses the peptide chain and accelerates breakdown. If a reconstituted peptide must be frozen for longer storage, divide it into single-use aliquots first, so that each portion is thawed only once.
As a rule, never freeze and thaw the same solution more than once.
Protecting Peptides From Light and Heat
UV light and heat both accelerate degradation. Store peptides in opaque or amber containers and never leave them on a windowsill or near a radiator or other heat source.
Consistency of temperature matters as much as the temperature itself — repeated warming and cooling is more damaging than steady, slightly higher storage.

Most avoidable degradation comes down to a handful of errors:
- Exposing lyophilised powder to humid air.
- Leaving reconstituted solutions at room temperature.
